  1. Number of individual lines, M = 4, due to the fact that the non-equivalent protons HM and HX couple independently of each other to the proton HA (nM = 1, nX = 1);
  2. relative intesities of the idividual lines, 1 : 1 : 1 : 1, since the coupling of HA to HM gives rise to a doublet (1 : 1). Each of the lines of this doublet lines is subsequently spilt again into a doublet (1 : 1) due to the additional coupling with HX.
